Vimeo Announces “Share the Screen” SXSW Film Events, Partnership with Kickstart Diversity and First Female Filmmaker Investment

Vimeo continues to push its agenda for equality in the film industry, announcing today a series of “Share the Screen” events taking place at the SXSW Film Festival, as well as a development partnership with New York-based film and media incubator Big Vision Empty Wallet to fund select participants in its Kickstart Diversity program. Today Vimeo also unveiled its first 2016 “Share the Screen” filmmaker investment with the acquisition of Marina Rice Bader’s film Ava’s Impossible Things.

Vimeo will kick off its SXSW events with a special “Share the Screen Staff Picks Cinema” in the Vimeo Theater on Friday, March 11 at the Austin Convention Center. The 90-minute screening will feature the captivating work of seven female creators who have been Staff Picked by Vimeo: Allie Avital, Kat Candler, Judy Craig, Razan Ghalayini, Bianca Giaever, Kelsey Goldyrch and Abigail Horton.
On Sunday, Vimeo will host a “Share the Screen Meet-Up” in the Filmmaker Lounge in the Austin Convention Center featuring celebrated guests from its Friday screening. For more information, visit the event page. Neither event requires an RSVP, but attendees will need a SXSW Film Pass for entry into the Austin Convention Center.
As part of today’s announcement, Vimeo is also proud to unveil a new development partnership with Big Vision Empty Wallet’s Kickstart Diversity Program. Launched in October 2015, the program supports films, pilots, web series, and multi-platform projects with diverse teams through an incentive package, which includes nationwide discounts and an exclusive distribution lab. As part of the partnership, Vimeo’s development team will review all Kickstart Diversity projects, with the opportunity for select projects to receive dedicated funding in exchange for distribution on Vimeo On Demand.
Lastly, Vimeo is excited to announce the acquisition of Ava’s Impossible Things, from director Marina Rice Bader as part of its “Share the Screen” investment in emerging female filmmakers. The film marks the fifth narrative feature from Bader, whose last film, Anatomy of a Love Seen, premiered exclusively on Vimeo On Demand in 2015. Bader’s Ava’s Impossible Things follows Ava’s struggles with reality after she receives a shocking request from her terminally ill mother, and her subsequent plunge into a dream world that summons up old friends and long-forgotten desires. The film will premiere exclusively on Vimeo in Summer 2016.
Announced earlier this year, “Share the Screen” is a three-part initiative to elevate and empower female filmmakers. The program aims to foster gender equality with a financial commitment to invest in female-led programming, educational workshops and onsite promotions spotlighting female voices.
